The winter months are practically defined by their abundance of indulgences. We've all given into the temptation of a Christmas cookie, or a slice--okay, two slices--of pumpkin pie. And what are the holidays without a little extravagance every now and then anyway? But those treats should be seen for what they are; extravagances, not the gateway drug to all night binging on eggnog and gingerbread. One great thing about winter is that the produce in season tastes just as good, if not better. Fruit--clementines, persimmons, pomegranates, and kumquats to name a few--will satisfy that sweet craving, and help fend off that pesky winter cold. It's a win-win! Head to the Sommerville Winter Farmers Market, held in the Center for the Arts at the Armory, to stock up on healthy options. It's an amazing asset for the neighborhood to be able to eat fresh and buy local year round. What's more, most vendors accept plastic for payment, making the commitment to healthy eating even more convenient. Sure, we're all covered up with scarves and coats and long underwear now--but spring will be here before we know it!
Switch Up Your Workout Routine
Working out becomes exponentially more difficult during the colder months. Outdoor workouts become pretty much unbearable, gyms become over-crowded, and even the thought of breaking a sweating sends a (literal) shiver down your spine. But the temperature is decreasing is no excuse for your body mass index to increase. You've got to keep both your brain and muscles engaged. When your brain is challenged, finding the motivation to workout isn't nearly as impossible. We recommend incorporating some non-traditional activities into your winter workout. Take Tree of Life Thai Chi Center in Sommerville for example; a variety of classes are available at all levels, including all-day workshops, groups and private instruction. Yoga is certainly a workout that challenges both body and mind. O2 Yoga, also in Sommerville, is a great studio for beginners and experts alike. Experienced teachers will guide you through exercises designed to build flexibility, strength, and a greater awareness of one's body.

The hardest part might be getting in to the habit of exercising regularly. The winter months give you so many excuses to just stay indoors and maybe turn on the tube, but once you discover an indoor routine that works for you and your space, you'll get through winter before you know it and be able to enjoy all of that holiday food along the way!
